![]() ![]() I like being in the dark, finding out the truth throughout the book in bits and pieces. Even Kay, which I really tend to like in novels. I felt like it really made for an interesting read, and it kept me on my toes at all times. I really enjoyed the fact that we couldn’t trust anyone in this story. Later on I ended up really hating Brie, but I still like the fact that we didn’t have that overused, cliche trope in this book. I initially really liked the fact that with Brie and Kay we didn’t have a lesbian character who was hopelessly in love with her straight friend who would never love her back. ![]() ![]() So I’m really not surprised that I loved this book as much as I did.įirst off, I loved the LGBT representation in this book, so many lesbian or bisexual characters who were of varying different personalities. People Like Us definitely checked a lot of my boxes. This book was so enjoyable, I loved every minute of it. ![]()

The result is, indeed, something of beauty, wherein we become witnesses to the feminist force of definition. ![]() Her centerpiece poem, “Voyage of the Sable Venus,” catalogs the names and descriptions of Western art objects and reconceptualizes the power of naming and of a reestablished archive to extraordinary effect. So reads the epigraph of Robin Coste Lewis’s titular poem in Voyage of the Sable Venus, which Alta Journal’s California Book Club will discuss at its June 17 gathering (click here to sign up).īeauty is a central narrative and thematic concern in Lewis’s debut poetry collection, which attends acutely to the effaced, elusive, and erased figures of Black women throughout the Western world. ![]() ![]() ![]() During her early years, she was an eager reader and even wrote her first poem at the young age of eight. However, her legacy as the pioneering feminist of Latin America remains important in the modern day as she continues to inspire feminist movements.Ĭruz was born out of wedlock in 1651 near Mexico City, Mexico, demonstrating the fact that even the beginning of her life was out of the ordinary. While Cruz was able to rise up and challenge the gender roles of her time by publishing controversial works, there were major effects of her expressing her voice as she faced gender discrimination and succumbed to hegemony at the end of her career. As a self-taught scholar, nun, poet, playwright, and composer, Cruz demonstrated all the unique elements of a woman present in a patriarchal society. ![]() Even significant today, this woman is known as Sor Juana Inés de La Cruz. While many women abided by this gender role, a particular woman went against it, becoming a controversial feminist during the 1600s. In fact, this biased gender role was an aspect of the social hierarchy even during the post-Colonial era in Latin America. ![]() Males were viewed as superiors over females, and women were expected to maintain primarily domestic roles in the household. The crew then would spend 18 months on Mars before returning to Earth. Two more spacecraft would launch from Earth to Mars at the next available window, 26 months after the ERV took flight: a second ERV, and a habitat carrying the astronauts. This rover’s work will ensure that the ERV’s fuel tank is topped up on the Red Planet. Aboard this spacecraft will be a nuclear-powered rover that generates rocket fuel from the carbon-dioxide-dominated Martian atmosphere. Mars Direct, which Zubrin first proposed in the late 1980s and early 1990s, calls for an Earth Return Vehicle (ERV) that launches uncrewed to Mars and arrives at the Red Planet six months later. Mars Direct, Zubrin argued, makes more sense than SpaceX’s current Starship architecture and the plans of NASA, which may use the Gateway lunar space station as a staging point for human Mars missions. 23, Robert Zubrin made the case for his long-standing “ Mars Direct” plan. After finding out his father is not his father, he does not get angry, or resentful about the man who acts as his dad, but appreciates him even more because he know he is a great father because he wants to be not because he is obligated to be. Victor is a sensitive and loving boy who comes to his own conclusions with great thought. Victor likes to read, and is a good poet, surprisingly passionate about words even though it is his inability to express them that makes his life difficult. This takes rather a toll on his confidence, making it even harder to speak to people.
